A German-based couple with the International Baptist Church [IBC], Brussels, have donated sixty-four boxes of books to the Accra Diocese of The Methodist Church Ghana.

Numbering about 3,000, the books included Christian, fictional, and children’s books as well as other library materials.

Mr Jacques Williems and his spouse, Mrs Janet Abena Sekyibea Williems, formerly with the Bethany Society in the Dzorwulu Circuit, made the donation as part of their โ€˜Books for Libraries in Ghana Projectโ€™, to help support the Diocese in equipping its members with positive reading habits.

The donation, which took place at the Accra Diocesan Secretariat, Dansoman on Tuesday, November 07, 2023, is considered one of the largest and first of its kind received by the Diocese.

Explaining his motivation for making the donation, Mr Williems disclosed that the gesture was in pursuit of their vision to assist school, church, and community libraries in furtherance of both academic and religious studies. He acknowledged the Evangelical Theological Faculty, Heverlee, Belgium, where he works as a Library Helper for providing some of the books for donation.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Diocesan Bishop, the Synod Secretary of Accra Diocese, the Very Rev Mrs Doris Abena Saah, extended profound gratitude to the Williems for initiating the โ€˜Books for Libraries in Ghana Projectโ€™ as concerned Christians, adding, “we shall see to distributing the books to our schools and churches,โ€ฆthe hymnals go to our choristers.”

Present at the short ceremony to receive the items were the Accra Diocesan Lay Chairman and Honorary Diocesan Treasurer, Bro Joseph Eduam, and Bro Jacob Bright Donkor, respectively.

The โ€˜Books for Libraries in Ghana Projectโ€™ originates from Brussels and seeks to collaborate with stakeholders to supplement children’s reading, comprehension, and vocabulary, thereby discouraging them from long hours of surfing the internet. The project makes donations to groups in Ghana annually.
